**Evolutionary Roots**
To understand a cat's affinity for sleep, it's essential to delve into their evolutionary history. Cats are natural predators, and their ancestors were skilled hunters who relied on bursts of energy to chase and capture prey. However, hunting is an energy-intensive activity, and the need for ample rest was critical to conserve energy and ensure successful hunts.
Over time, this evolutionary adaptation led to the development of a sleep pattern that combines short periods of intense activity with long stretches of rest. This sleep strategy not only helped them save energy but also allowed them to remain alert during their active periods, ready to pounce on any opportunity for a meal.
**Deep Sleep and REM**
Cats don't just sleep for the sake of it; they cycle through various stages of sleep, just like humans. One of the most intriguing sleep stages in cats is REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. This is the stage associated with vivid dreams in humans, and in cats, it's often characterized by twitching whiskers, paws, and even soft vocalizations. During REM sleep, the brain is highly active, suggesting that cats may be dreaming about their adventures or reliving their hunting experiences.
Cats also experience deep sleep stages, where their body repairs and regenerates tissues, and the brain processes information from the day's activities. Deep sleep is essential for overall well-being and contributes to a cat's physical and mental health.
**Circadian Rhythms and Adaptation**
Cats are crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active during the dawn and dusk hours. This behavior aligns with their evolutionary history as predators, taking advantage of the low light conditions to hunt effectively. Their sleep patterns have evolved to accommodate this lifestyle, with extended periods of sleep during the day to prepare for their active phases at dawn and dusk.
**Environmental Factors**
Domesticated cats might sleep more than their wild counterparts due to changes in their environment. A safe and consistent home environment reduces the need for constant vigilance, allowing cats to indulge in longer sleep periods. Additionally, a well-fed domestic cat doesn't have to expend as much energy searching for food, further contributing to their lengthy naps.
**A Lesson in Self-Care**
So, what can we learn from our feline friends' sleep habits? Cats remind us of the importance of balance. Their ability to switch between intense activity and deep rest highlights the significance of pacing ourselves and ensuring we get adequate sleep for optimal physical and mental health.
As you observe your cat curled up in a sunbeam, lost in peaceful slumber, remember that their love for sleep is rooted in their evolutionary journey. From their ancestors' hunting strategies to their crepuscular nature, cats have developed a sleep pattern that maximizes their survival and well-being.
As we marvel at their sleeping prowess, let's also be inspired to prioritize our own rest and embrace the lessons that these mysterious and captivating creatures teach us about the art of finding harmony in our lives.

1. Is your home in a suitable location?
Your home's location is by far the most important factor when deciding whether you should let your cat outside or not. Apartments and condos are not convenient for outdoor cat living because it's close to impossible to make sure your cat can easily go in and out of your home. In addition, balconies and patios may tempt your feline to climb up, increasing the risk of falling and fractures. Busy streets are another thing to avoid at all costs. Roughly 26 million cats die annually in the U.S. from traffic accidents. Cars pose by far the greatest outdoor risk to your pet, so if you live on a busy street it's best to keep your cat indoors.
2. How old is your cat?
Your cat's age is another important factor to take into account before letting your cat outdoors. Kittens are very vulnerable and defenseless, so it's best to keep them indoors at least until they are 13-14 weeks old. By then, they should be up to date on their vaccinations and micro chipped. If, on the other hand, your cat has always been an indoor cat and is older, she may not even want to venture outside, and that's OK. Adolescent and young adult cats are best equipped to explore the outdoors, while kittens remain vulnerable and older cats may be stressed out by the noises and unfamiliarity of the outdoor environment.
3. Are there other pets or wildlife roaming around in the area?
Have you heard any coyotes? Do you have bobcats or mountain lions roaming in the outskirts of your town? What about other neighborhood pets, including outdoor cats and dogs? Any of these animals may pose a threat to your cat. Despite its feisty nature, your cat will have a hard time confronting a coyote or a bobcat. Multiple cats in the neighborhood will often engage in territory wars and cat fights. In general, the fewer pets around, the safer it will be for your cat.
4. Can your cat retrieve to safety quickly and on his own terms?
If you let your cat outdoors, you need to make sure there's an open window, patio door or cat door for him to come in through. This door needs to be easily accessible from any location. You can use this same door when you let your cat out, so she remembers it and runs to it whenever she feels like going back home. If you opt for a cat door, leave the flap off the first few times you let your cat out. This will give her some time to get used to it. If you're leaving a window open, make sure your cat can quickly and comfortably leap through it if needed.
5. Is your cat healthy?
Finally, you need to consider your cat's overall health before letting her outside. Being up to date on shots, flee, tick and worms medication is a must. In addition, you can check with your vet if your cat has any specific health conditions. Suppressed immune system (due to an FIV virus or leukemia, for example) makes cats very susceptible to any disease. In such cases, it is better to keep them indoor and avoid infections that can result from the outdoors. Are your cat's paws in good shape? The outdoor terrain may be harsh on your cat's paws and cause bleeding and discomfort. In short, the healthier the cat, the more likely she is to enjoy the outdoors. If your cat has medical issues, keeping her indoors may result in a longer, more comfortable life.
Still unsure whether you should let your cat outside or not? Try taking her out with a harness first. A little stroll around the yard may give you a more definitive answer on whether your feline is ready to play outside. Make sure your cat is used to wearing a harness, by slowly introducing it indoors over at least a couple of weeks. The first outings should be supervised and followed by a tasty treat upon returning home for extra reassurance and motivation. Let your cat explore and slowly expand its territory without trying to force her out of her comfort zone. In the end, your cat may opt for staying in and that's perfectly fine. The important thing is to understand and balance the risks of letting your pet out versus keeping them indoors.

]]>1. Base Size
Base size is by far the most important thing to consider when picking a cat tree. Cat trees with narrow, small bases are less stable and easily tip over. Think tall cat trees with small square bases - these are definitely a no-go. In addition to the possible damage a falling cat tree can inflict on your home and furnishings, your cat will avoid the unstable structure altogether. Cats are careful creatures and they don't want to climb and jump on shaky and unstable things. Make sure the base is wide enough to keep the cat tree stable and to prevent it from tipping over, even when a 12 pound cat jumps on it.
2. Hideaway VS Tower
Some cats like to pretend hunt and ambush. Others like to take the high ground and stare at birds and the outdoors. Is your cat a hunter or a climber? Does she like hiding or surveying the patio? If your cat likes hideaways, pick a cat tree that has plenty of burrows and tunnels. If, on the other hand, your cat loves climbing and sleeping up high, pick a tall cat tree with plenty of open shelves for her to perch on.
3. Color Considerations
Cat trees take up a lot of space in your home, so you want to pick a color that will suit the rest of your decor. Beige or grey usually work best because these neutral colors blend in and don't stand out too much. One thing to consider is your cat's fur color - black cat hair will be an eyesore on a light beige cat tree, so if you have a black cat pick a darker color instead. Same goes for black cat trees and light colored kitty cats!
4. Weight And Stability
Pick a cat tree with a heavier, stable frame, even if that means spending a few extra bucks. Cats, and older cats in particular, want to feel solid ground when sleeping, hunting or playing. If the cat tree is wobbly, chances are your cat won't use it. If it has scratching posts, they have to be stable enough for your cat to sharpen her claws without shaking the entire tree.
5. Size And Location
Finally, think about where you'd like to place the cat tree. Can it be near a window, so your cat can spy on the neighbors and lounge in the sun? The location of the cat tree is a huge factor in whether your cat will use it at all. Warm sunny spots are usually preferred, ideally next to a window or a patio door. Remember that location is more important than tree size or design. Getting a smaller tree that can fit in a cat friendly spot always fares better than picking a large tree you have to place in a corner.
]]>1. Location, Location, Location
The first step toward cat proofing your Christmas tree is picking the right location. Avoid placing the tree near armchairs, couches, shelves or end tables. All of these can and will be used as launch pads by your cat, you can bet on it. Pick a spot that is more isolated, so your cat is not able to attack ornaments by lounging on her favorite easy chair. Lack of furniture near the tree will make it harder for your cat to jump on it and bat at the ornaments.
2. Solid Foundation
We've had our Christmas tree knocked over a couple of times by a cat set on climbing up on it. If your cat is a climber (and most of them are), make sure that the base of the tree is heavy enough to outweigh your cat. If you have a fake tree, the plastic base just won't do - your cat can tip the whole thing over in a second. Try tying something heavier to the base so the tree is more stable. That way even if the cat decides to climb on it, it will stay in place and not crash along with all the ornaments.
3. Cat Proof Christmas Ornaments
When you have cats you have to compromise on certain things and Christmas ornaments is definitely at the top of the list. Glass is a no-go for obvious reasons. We also try to avoid glitter and tinsel - the cats just can't resist this stuff! However, there are plenty of cat proof Christmas ornaments to choose from. Plastic or wood work best. And for a sweet nod to your mischievous pet, you can pick these adorable wooden Christmas cat ornaments - totally adorable, unique and cat proofed!
4. Keeping The High Ground
If you do want to display breakable ornaments, place them near the top of the tree. Same goes for garlands and tinsel. Keep the bottom of the tree sparsely decorated, thus removing the temptation at your cat's eye level.
5. Provide Alternatives
Does your cat keep eating the fake Christmas tree? Is she using it as a scratching post? You can provide alternatives for these Christmas-destroying habits easily! Get a pot of cat grass so your cat is able to snack on real grass as she pleases. Place her scratching post in an easy-to-reach location and make sure it's in good shape. If her scratching post is well-loved, you can refresh it by wrapping new twine or rope around it.
6. Save The Presents For Last
Many cats love paper. Kneading paper, that is, until the Christmas presents look as if they've been through a shredder. You may be tempted to leave your beautifully wrapped presents under the tree early on. However, there will be no stopping your cat from sleeping on them and kneading them constantly. Preserve your bows and gift wrap by placing the presents under the tree on or right before Christmas Eve.
7. Bushy Trees As A Natural Obstacle
Whether you have an artificial Christmas tree or a natural one, the bushier it is the better. Our fake Christmas tree has survived 5 Christmases with two cats and it's definitely on its last leg - its branches are hanging low and the cats can now easily drag them down and jump on them. Bushier trees are like cat repellents, because they make it harder to reach ornaments and climb on.
8. Sacrifice Some Of The Ornaments
Sometimes turning a cheap ornament into a cat toy can provide hours of entertainment and keep kitty away from the tree. We found these light plastic stars that our cat loves. Every year I throw a couple at her and she immediately starts batting them, pouncing on them and hunting them under the rug. Novelty is everything when it comes to feline entertainment, so make sure you set aside a fun new Christmas toy for your cat.
9. Skip The Tree Skirt
Most cats love rugs and carpets. They like sleeping on them, stashing toys under them and pouncing on them. Cat proof your Christmas tree by skipping the tree skirt. If you use one, chances are your cat will want to sleep under the tree all the time (the purr-fect hiding spot, right) and so all the ornaments will be easy to reach and in plain sight.
10. Be Mindful Of The Surroundings
Accidents are bound to happen. After all, these are the stories that make cat ownership so much fun! It's always good to hope for the best and expect the worst when it comes to cats and Christmas trees! Make sure there are no candles near the Christmas tree. Place it further away from fireplaces and other hazardous household objects. Move breakable home decorations in a different location, away from the tree.

]]>1. Provide Easily Access To Food And Water
Let's start with the basics here - food and water! Before leaving for work, make sure your cat has access to her water and food bowls and cannot lock herself out of the room where those are located. For new pets and young kittens that are prone to mischief, you might want to leave water bowls in a few places around the house. That way, if a water bowl gets spilled in the course of play, your cat will still be able to find another water source. Try a set of these non-slip bowls that are a hit with our cats and have a silicone ring that prevents them from knocking them around and spilling the contents:
2. Leave Toys Around The House
Younger cats and kittens are very active, so make sure your cat has plenty of entertainment while you're away. New is always better in this case, so treat your cat like you would treat a toddler - provide them with a steady stream of inexpensive cat toys. You can buy one of the jumbo packs of cat toys and reward your feline with a new one every week or so. Toys don't have to be expensive - sometimes a hair tie, a box, or a sheet of paper is enough to entertain your cat for hours! On the picture below you can see a cat laptop scratch pad infused with catnip - a great choice for keeping your cat occupied and happy! Keep a variety of catnip and plush toys around, as they will keep your cat busy and are safe to play with unsupervised. Click here to see our latest collection of funny catnip plush toys for domestic cats.
3. Provide A Fun Watch Spot
Cats like to watch and survey their realm so to speak! A cat tree near a window or a comfy armchair they can perch on to watch the outdoors keeps your cat engaged and entertained for hours! Make sure you have tall furniture, a cat tree or cat floating shelves near a window so your cat can get a taste of the outdoors while you're at work. Bonus points if you can place it near a bird feeder!
4. For New Pets: Take Some Time Off Or Schedule Check Ins
Getting used to a new environment can be challenging for cats. If you're bringing home a new pet or adopting a kitten, it's wise to plan accordingly. To make the transition easier, plan on picking up your new pet before a long weekend, so you can hang out with them at home for a couple of days and help them get acquainted with the new surroundings. If you're not able to stay in with your cat, you can find someone to check in on your cat while you're away. Whether it's a relative, a friend, or a pet sitter, having this check up will give you a piece of mind and reassure your pet that they are not abandoned.
5. Cat Proof Your House
You don't want to go back home to shattered vases and broken picture frames, right? Hide the fragile, expensive and easily breakable home goods away, so your ferocious feline can't damage them. I know this is easier said than done, but you can place the most valuable home decor pieces on higher shelves or inside cabinets to keep them safe from curious paws! House plants are an easy prey for cats, so you can move them in your patio or place them on a bookcase to discourage your cat from eating them and dragging them around the house.
6. Switch To Work Friendly Feeding Schedule
Patience may be a virtue, but it's in short supply in cats! If you usually feed your cat at night, try switching to morning feeding schedule instead! That way your cat will be fed and won't have to wait for you to come back home to feed her. Maybe you'll have a long day at the office or get stuck in traffic - you don't want to be greeted by an impatient hungry cat!
7. Provide Easy Access To A Clean Litter Box
Easy access to a litter box, of course, is a must, but a CLEAN litter box is just as important! Cats are tidy creatures. Discourage them from revenge-peeing on your carpet by providing them with a fresh and clean litter box they would love to use instead!
8. Restrict Dangerous Areas
Whether it's the garage or the pantry, some areas are just not cat friendly. Your cat may get hurt or get into something he shouldn't be eating or playing with. Making sure that you close all doors and cabinets that kitty has no business in is an easy way to avoid mess and mayhem.
9. Make Sure Nap Spots Abound
You might be worried about leaving your kitten alone while at work, but in reality he will probably spend most of the time you're gone sleeping! Cats sleep a lot, and I mean a LOT! Something like 12 to 16 hours a day! And, as nocturnal creatures, their preferred nap time is actually during the day! Make sure you place their favorite blanket on the couch, leave the bed unmade if that's where they snooze and provide easy access to their cat bed. Chances are your cat will spend half of the work day sleeping! Your cat will love a cave-type cat hut, as a snug enclosed cat bed will provide your feline with a feeling of safety. This Jungle Cat Bed, for example, makes your cat feel protected while allowing her to keep an eye on her surroundings - an ideal choice for a cat at home. It is also very affordable and can travel with you whenever you move or travel.
10. Reward And Play Upon Your Return
Celebrate the end of your work day with lots of treats, pets and play! Your cat has surely missed you and she is excited to have you back! Tummy rubs, favorite treats and some play will be the purr-fect end-of-day activity! It will reassure your cat that you'll come home every day and shower her with love!

]]>The first thing to remember is that training a cat is somewhat different from training a dog. While dogs are pack animals who want to please their "alpha" (i.e. owner), cats tend to be more independent and focused on pleasing themselves rather than their human! Cats also do not respond to punishment - they don't understand it as a consequence of unwanted behavior. In other words, the trick to training your cat is rewarding desired behavior. It is easier to train a kitten rather than an adult cat. However, we managed to train both of our adult cats to do the tricks below in no time. Just make sure you have your cat's favorite treats in stock!
1. Get Up On Hind Legs
This was the first trick we taught our cat, Nemo, and now he does it every night. Here's how this worked. Before serving your cat's dinner, hold the bowl with food in one hand at the level of your knees and say "up". You may need to repeat the command a few times and lower the bowl a little to get your cat interested. Eventually, your cat will get up on his hind legs to check the contents of the bowl and get to his dinner. Once your cat is up on his hind legs, offer praise, pet him and serve his dinner in the usual spot. Repeat the same thing for a few days until your cat gets the drill. Then, instead of lowering the food bowl, extend your hand only and say "up". By now your cat will associate the command and the gesture with getting dinner, so he will get up on his hind legs and try to reach your hand. The gesture and the word "up" will now trigger the same response from your cat. Just don't forget to offer food or snacks when they have performed the trick.
2. Sit
Teach your cat to sit on command using treats and a clicker. You can get a clicker for less than $5 - it makes training a lot easier! Start by sitting on the floor and holding a treat for your cat, right above her head level. Once your cat sees the treat, start moving the treat so your cat follows it with her eyes. She will automatically assume a sitting position as she's following the treat. Then, click and reward. Once your cat has mastered the sit-click-reward sequence, start using the word "sit", then click, then treat. Finally, remove the click and use only the word "sit" and reward.
3. Fetch
The easiest way to teach your cat to fetch would be starting off with a new toy. Once you open the toy, throw it and wait for your cat's curiosity to kick in - she will chase the toy and play with it by picking it up with her mouth. Once your cat picks the toy up, click and treat. The cat will drop the toy to eat the treat. Repeat the same throw-click-treat sequence, moving gradually further away from your cat. If she brings the toy to you, click and treat. If she leaves the toy, grab the toy, bring it to your cat and wait until she has it back in her mouth. Then click and treat. This may take some time, so be patient. If your cat does not seem interested in the toy, you can try rubbing it with a little bit of catnip or some of her food. The key is showing your cat that the toy needs to be in her mouth for the click and treat to happen. As you start moving away, your cat will know to bring the toy back to you. Once you have the throw-bring-click-treat response locked in, start using "fetch" before the click. Finally, remove the click and use the word "fetch" only.
4. Give Paw
For this one, choose your cat's most favorite treat. Hold the treat slightly above your cat's nose, moving it slightly and trying to entice her to bat or reach for it with her paw. Then say "tap" and reward with treat. Once this combination is working, save the treat for after the tap and only use the command as a trigger.
5. Jump Through Obstacles
You don't have to be a tiger trainer to get your cat to jump through hoops! If your cat already associates a clicker with treats, you're all set to begin teaching her this trick. If not, start by a click-treat training, so your cat knows she gets a treat after hearing a click. Next, hold a hoop between you and your cat, click and hold the treat on the other side of the hoop. Your cat will jump through the hoop to get the treat. If she takes a shortcut instead, do not reward and repeat. You can slowly introduce a command word like "jump" before clicking. Finally, you can skip the clicking and only use the word "jump" to get your cat to go through the hoop.
]]>1. Cats Were Considered Gods In Egypt
If your cat acts like a royal, there's a valid reason for this. After all, in ancient Egypt cats were considered gods. So your purrfect feline is just holding on to her divine roots! Cats held a special place in Egyptian mythology. The cat goddess Bastet is represented as a woman with a cat's head and was one of the most important Egyptian deities. She was believed to bring good fortune to people who housed cats and for good reason - cats kept the rat population in ancient Egypt in check, keeping food supplies safe and reducing risk of contagious diseases spread by rodents.
2. Cats Bring Good Luck In Japan
Say hello to the "waving cat"! This welcoming cat is called Maneki-neko, or "the beckoning cat". It is believed to bring good luck. Beckoning cat figurines can be seen in restaurant, shops and other businesses. Some historians believe that the notion that they bring good luck comes from the Japanese belief that a cat washing her face means that a visitor will soon arrive. In other words, customers are about to enter the business venue! Ka-ching!
3. Lucky Sneezing Cat
In Italy, a sneezing cat was believed to bring good luck to anyone who hears it. In particular, a sneezing cat means good fortune and money will come your way! Bring out the oranges and wait for the sneeze!
4. Good Luck Black Cat
Black cats have a bad rep in many cultures but not among the Pennsylvania Dutch. They believed that if a black cat wanders into your home it's actually a sign of good fortune coming your way! We're so glad that these beautiful cats are appreciated!
5. Ghosts and Purring
In Ireland, people believed that a purring cat means that there's a ghost in the room. Well, if this is the case, then we must live in a haunted house with all the purring around!
]]>Does your cat love drinking water from cups instead of bowls? You're not alone! Our two kitties love drinking from a cup! After multiple spills and broken glasses I decided to make a cheap and easy DIY cat water cup stand and I'm happy to report that it has been working out great! This has been one of the most useful DIY projects for cats I've tried and the best part is that you probably already have all the materials at home! It only takes about 15 minutes to make this cat water cup stand and my felines have been loving it for 2 years now!
OK, so on to the stuff you'll need for this stand! One or two plastic cups (Solo or something similar), a cardboard box, spray paint and letter stickers. The paint and the stickers are optional and for decoration only.
The box you choose should be big enough to fit the plastic cups, but still narrow enough so your cats can reach them. I got mine from Michael's and it measures 7x5x3.5.
All you need to do is cut a hole in the box equal to the mouth of the cup. I used a Sharpie to mark the height of the box on the plastic cup, measured the diameter of the cup at this mark, found a candle with similar diameter to trace it on the box and cut the hole with a utility knife.
I wanted to add a little bit of decoration to the cups, so I used letter stickers to write the names of our cats and spray painted the top.
And voila! All you have to do is fill the cups with water and let your cats indulge in their weird water-drinking habits. No more spills or broken glasses!
Looking for more DIY projects for cats? Try another one of our favorites - an easy to make cozy DIY cat bed.
]]>Cats spend around 16 hours a day sleeping, so what better way to spoil your favorite cat than with a cozy cat bed! This easy to make DIY cat bed combines the two things cats love most - fuzzy blankets and boxes! I made it a couple of years ago and it has survived two moves and thousands of cat naps! It's cheap and easy to make, so give it a try! It has been by far the most useful DIY cat furniture project I've ever come across!
All you'll need to make this DIY cat bed is an old fleece blanket - preferably kitty's favorite, a cardboard box, rope or twine for decoration, hot glue and a piece of drawer liner. No need to break the bank at PetSmart only to find your cat sleeping in an old box again! This project can be completed with stuff you have around the house!
Pick a box that's wide enough to fit your cat - our Nala cat is quite chunky so I opted for a bigger box. Cut the box to about 4" in height so your kitty can easily get in and out.
Next, cut 4 or 5 pieces of fleece blanket matching the dimensions of the box (Tip: if you fold the blanket and then cut you’ll save some time).
Then, cut a larger piece of the fleece blanket with the following dimensions:
length=twice the box length + 2″
width=box width + 2″
Wrap the large piece around the smaller pieces and use hot glue to glue them together.
Now we need an even larger piece of fleece blanket for the inside of the box. The dimensions of this one should be equal to:
length=box length + 2 x box height + 4″
width=box width + 2 x box height + 4″
Glue this larger piece to the box, leaving 2″ of fleece on its outer sides.
To prevent the DIY cat bed from sliding, glue 4 patches of drawer liner at the bottom of the box. Then, glue the rope or twine around the box for decoration.
Flip the box around and place the glued pieces of fleece blanket inside. They will be our DIY pillow, providing extra softness for our picky four-legged friends.
If you're feeling creative, you can use some of the leftover fleece fabric to decorate the cat bed. I tried making a paw sign and writing “Snuggle” with little fleece flakes.
Below you can see Nala with her brand new DIY kitten bed.

]]>Your cat is a part of the family, so of course you want to do something fun for her birthday! Whether you have a playful kitten on your hands or an adult cat, you can throw your cat a fun birthday party that everyone will enjoy (yes, even the birthday girl herself!). Try these 5 easy cat birthday party tips and make some memories with your favorite feline!
1. Make a Cat Birthday Cake
Cat Birthday Cake Recipe by Casey from Good Food Stories; Photo Credit Casey from Good Food Stories
Nothing says "Happy Birthday" quite like a yummy treat! Enjoying some much deserved birthday cake is probably the best part of your cat's special day! Casey from Good Food Stories shared an easy to make birthday cake for your cat that we tried, tested and loved! If you're running low on time or if your cat is a very picky eater, you can always use her favorite wet food and decorate it with cat treats - this worked great for our Nemo's 3rd birthday! Just don't forget to blow out the candle and make a wish on your cat's behalf!
2. Get a Catnip Cake Toy
Birthday Cake Catnip Toy from Purrs and Whiskers, $12
Purr-fect for pictures and funny videos, this birthday cake catnip toy will make your cat pounce, lick and jump around with happiness! Handmade and filled with organic catnip, it makes taking birthday pictures a lot easier. It serves double-duty as your cat's birthday cake and a new favorite toy!
3. Turn Your House Into a Cat Playground
Make sure your cat gets plenty of entertainment by turning a room or a corner of your house into a kitty's paradise! We're talking boxes, boxes, more boxes, small and cheap cat toys, paper balls, wool and whatever else you have handy. You can create the perfect playground for your cat without spending a dime! Your cat loves paper? Spread some wrapping paper around! She is obsessed with boxes? Cut big round holes in old boxes and let her explore this box maze! I usually also get a bag of cheap cat toys because our cats love anything new, so even the simplest toys keep them entertained if they are brand new. As any cat owner can attest, cats play with random things like pens, tags, cables. Embrace the mess and let your cat enjoy all the entertainment!
4. Surprise Her With New Toys Or Trees
If some of your cat's essentials need to be replaced, her birthday is the perfect occasion to do that. Whether you need a new cat tree or want to try out a new fancy cat toy, bed or fountain, now you have a great excuse! The novelty of it all will keep your cat happy and entertained, while you'll update some of your cat furniture must-haves!
5. Snap Some Pictures
Cat Birthday Outfit from Purrs and Whiskers, $21.50
We know cats are not big on playing dress-up, but if you keep the outfits easy to put on, light and comfortable, you may be surprised by your cat's modelling abilities! This cat birthday outfit consists of a bow tie and a birthday hat. It's easy to put on and take off and is light enough not to bother your kitty kins. She may not want to wear it for hours, but you'll be able to snap a few funny pictures for the yearbook!
]]>1. They Like Catnip
You may have noticed that your kitty cat goes crazy for catnip! Licks, bats, rolls and jumps abound whenever you offer her a catnip toy. About 40% of domestic cats are not affected by catnip, but some of their big cat cousins love that stuff! Jaguars and lions have a strong reaction to the plant and get just as excited as your domestic cat!
2. They Like Naps
Cats, big and small, spend the majority of their time napping! Some 12-16 hours a day, in fact! And just like your kitty needs her beauty rest, so do the big cats in the wild! Lions and tigers can snooze up to 20 hours a day, saving their energy for high-intensity hunts.
3. They Have a "Stink Face"
Have you noticed that sometimes your cat opens her mouth while sniffing things? This expression is known as the Flehmen response (or "stink face") and it also appears in big cats. The reason behind this funny face is the Jacobson's organ, located in the base of a feline's naval cavity. This organ allows cats to sniff-taste things and get an even better idea of what they are dealing with!
4. They Use Head Bumps to Mark Their Territory
Cats, big and small, rub against things to mark their territory. Whether a lion is rubbing against a tree or your cat is rubbing against your foot, they both release pheromones to claim their realm!
5. They Purr
Although lions and tigers roar instead of purr, cheetahs, bobcats and cougars can purr just like your house cat! Purring ability, rather than size, is actually one of the two main distinctions between the two cat families - Panthera (lion, tiger, jaguar, leopard) and Felis (wildcat, domestic cat, mountain cat).
6. They Are Obligate Carnivores
All felines are obligate carnivores - meaning strict meat eaters. This is a result of their evolutionary path - because of years and years of meat-only diet, cats don't have the ability to produce themselves certain amino acids and vitamins, so they need their prey to provide these necessary nutrients. Despite filling up on Friskies instead of a fatty antelope, your kitty cat shares the big cats' need for a meat diet.
7. They Love Boxes
The love of cardboard boxes crosses species boundaries when it comes to felines! Just watch this funny video below from Big Cat Rescue and you'll see that there's something about boxes that makes them irresistible to all cats!
